Many search engines such as Google and AOL Search use website index data from DMOZ, also called The Open Directory Project, to assist with indexing websites. It is essential for website administrators or even a website’s #1 fan to submit their website to be indexed into DMOZ so that search engines can find additional information about the website. Submitting a website to be indexed into DMOZ can be difficult but with some assistance, it can be enjoyable!

Steps

Visit the DMOZ directory website.
Review the top-level categories and click on the most appropriate category to fit the website that you will be submitting.
Choose a subcategory, which are located below the alphabet links in the top center of the page. Since many categories are extensive in size, there may be many subcategories from which to choose.
Continue to choose subcategories until you are at the lowest possible category. Although not always, it will generally be a small category with no more subcategory links at the top.
Click suggest URL which is the third link from the left in the gray bar of links at the top of the webpage.
Read the guidelines and rules thoroughly that are on the website submission page. In step one, a link is given to submission policies and instructions which should be carefully read so that your website submission form is correctly filled out.
Fill out the submission information so that it is complete while following all of the submission guidelines. The category should already be filled in with the category that was chosen. Be sure to also include your email address and user verification.
Read the Submission Agreement and once complete and you agree with it, press submit.
Wait for the website to be indexed. All of the website submissions for each category are reviewed by volunteers who spend their time to review the website submissions.

Tips

Review all of the possible categories for the website that you are submitting. Choosing the first category that you find may not be the best - it can delay the submission review time. Note that each website can only be indexed once, into one category.
Remember that all category editors (who are the users who review website submissions) are entirely volunteers. Some categories may be more thoroughly watched and reviewed than others. A website acceptance may take weeks if not months.
Not all website submissions are accepted, regardless of how well the submission form is filled out. There are various reasons, such as entering a website that is illegal, that a website would be denied indexing.
Website submissions are thoroughly read by real people. Follow all regulations as this will help you and the category editors.
If your website changes after it is indexed, particularly the website title/name or description, DMOZ has an option to update the listing. As with website submissions, updates can take a while to be reviewed and should be sent only when needed.
DMOZ has a website index for over seventy languages and is always adding new languages. If you own or know of a website in another language, submit it as well!

Warnings

Do not use promotional words and descriptions when filling in the website submission. If you do, it will take longer for your submission to be reviewed and there is a higher chance of getting your submission denied.
There are over two million unreviewed website submissions at the current time - only submit your website once! If you repeatedly submit the website, there will be a greater delay for the category editors to review the website submission and a less chance of getting your website indexed.
Never submit a website that goes against the DMOZ guidelines - pornographic and warez websites are not allowed!

Using lots of targeted keywords doesn’t always translate to improved SEO for your website and business. Balancing your titles, tag and description keywords with useful and appealing content for your target audience takes a lot of time and you want to be sure you’ll be rewarded for your effort by your website reaching the top of the search engines.If you’ve done any research at all, or just played around with different word combinations you probably have a list of (at least I hope you have them in a list. If not, that would be a good thing to do.) 20 or more keyword phrases. As ambitious as you may be, you still won’t make it to the top of any search engine for all of these keywords. Not for free anyhow.

This is something that many people screw up and they don’t understand why they’re not getting good SEO results. What is missing is the focus. You need to be focused on your SEO efforts. This is the first secret you need to know for Avoiding Keyword Suicide: Create a Short, Focused List of Keywords.

Many times you will be limited in the number of keywords that you can use for SEO. While other times you can use as many as you want. Either way, you always need to use the words on your ’short list’ first. Your first keywords are going to hold the most weight in the search engines. This is also true with titles. This is your second tip for avoiding keyword suicide: whenever possible, Use Your ’short list’ Keywords First. You may use other keyword phrases as well, but always after your short list. Another common mistake that is made by us do-it-yourself business owners is that we tend to alter our keyword short list with “new and better” keywords. Are these keywords actually any better? Maybe. But if you start optimizing your online material with different keywords you are likely allowing the ship to pull away with half of your passengers still standing on the dock.
